Location
Our lodge is located on the northern slope of Tenorio Volcano at 750 meters above sea level in the province of Alajuela. We are in north-east Costa Rica between Tenorio Volcano and Miravalles Volcano, overlooking the town of Bijagua and Lake Nicaragua. The journey to Bijagua is picturesque.

Directions by car (from San José)
• Take the Pan-American highway north from San Jose
• 7km north of Cañas, turn right at the intersection for Upala (route 6),
• Continue along this road until you reach Bijagua (approx 32km).
• Once in Bijagua, follow the main road until a small intersection on the right. There is a small supermarket on the corner called Super El Mercadito.
• Turn right at the intersection, pass the soccer field and high school on the right.
• At the following two y-intersections keep left
• Follow the signs and drive 3km uphill to arrive at our lodge (a 4X4 is not required).
Directions by Bus (from San José)
• You can catch a public bus from San Jose to Upala which passes through Bijagua. The trip takes about 4hrs. Tickets can be bought in advance at the bus station and cost around US$6. Buses leave from San Jose to Upala at 10.15am, 3.00pm and 5.00pm.
• Go to the Terminal Transnorte de Upala. Calle 12 (12th St) between Avenues 3 and 5 (Ph 2221-3318).
• Buy a ticket and take the bus from San José-Upala, x Canas
• Get off the bus in central Bijagua at a small intersection.
• There is a small supermarket on the corner called Super El Mercadito the old Banco Nacional and the police station.
• You can take a local taxi from in front of the El Mercadito to Heliconias (about 3km, US$5) or phone us at the Heliconias Lodge and Rainforest (Ph 2466- 8483).
Alternatively buses can be taken to the bus station in Cañas (from various locations including Liberia and Fortuna, Puntarenas) and then another bus from Cañas to Upala (stopping in Bijagua). Buses from Cañas to Upala depart regularly.
